Your kiteboarding lesson – what to expect

Brisbane Kite School gives kitesurfing lessons all year round, whenever there is enough wind.
Should the conditions be (or become) unsuitable for your kitesurfing lesson, we will reschedule.

Standard lessons run for two hours and are held in various locations, including Sandgate, Brighton, Redcliffe and Clontarf. You must meet your instructor at the kite shop before your lesson.

Our lessons are hands-on and you will be using proper kitesurfing gear throughout the whole lesson. We believe you'll learn faster with kitesurfing kites in your hands. We don't give theory lessons and we certainly don't sit you down at a table. If we need to draw a picture to demonstrate something, we'll draw it in the sand!

All equipment is provided. You can use your own kite and kiteboard but must use our harness, helmet & vest.

The kites we stock at the kite shop are Cabrinha, Ozone, Slingshot, Core and Best and you will be learning on the latest gear from these brands. If you have any preferences, please let us know!

Your kitesurfing lessons will be one-on-one with a minimum Level 1 IKO instructor by your side at all times. Currently, all our instructors are level 2 qualified.

We have both male and female instructors, if you would prefer to be taught by either, let us know.

We prefer to teach one-on-one for all lessons, but if you would prefer to learn with a friend contact us first to discuss your options.

What will you learn?

Our lessons adhere to IKO (International Kiteboarding Organization) standards. More details here
Amongst other things, we'll teach you how to:

  • set up and tune your kite for the conditions
  • launch and land safely
  • fly a kitesurfing kite
  • body-drag in the water
  • self-rescue
  • ride on the board downwind
  • ride on the board upwind
  • turning around
  • choose the right gear

We also run advanced lessons, covering everything from staying upwind, jumping, or riding in the waves - ask us how we can help!

What to bring

  • We provide all equipment.
  • Long boardies and a rashie or t-shirt - no budgie smugglers please, we don't wanna see that!
  • SPF 30+ sunscreen, hat and sunglasses for the land based components of the lesson.
  • A towel and warm, dry clothes for after your lesson (remember you might be packing up at sunset).
